Logbook 2: Skihütte Obererbs
While this is not technically an official SAC Hut (see more on the About page for specifics on this point), I felt it was fair to include it as this was one of the earliest snowshoeing trips I did in Switzerland.
The Obererbs Ski Hut is set on the south-eastern face of the Gross Kärpf in the Canton of Glarus. This is a very easy day hike and is accessible even for beginners. Total hike time with a meal break at the hut was 2:41 with 396m of gain and loss. Full stats can be found here.
The western part of the shown route is a fairly steep open face, and in the ~.5 meter snow we faced that day, it required some scrambling. For an easier route, I would follow the eastern leg of the route below which is mostly groomed winter hiking trails.
The weather on December 15th 2024 was complete whiteout conditions with <25m visibility at times. The topographical map, GPX route, and select photos are shown below.
Visibility near the hut. My trusty Leo showing the way.
The western approach was very steep in certain areas and was used as a descending route for backcountry ski and snowboarders which could be dangerous at times in limited visibility.
The Skithutte provided a much welcome shelter from the blizzard.
