Logbook 4: Glattalphütte
Distance: 6.9km | Elevation Gain/Loss: 125m | Total Time: 1:30
The Glattalphütte is likely one of the most easily accessible SAC huts in Switzerland. It sits atop a rock slab ridge roughly 200m from the top station of the Sahli-Glattalp gondola.
My wife and I made a lovely day hike trip out of the SAC hut by going for a walk around Glattalp lake which is one of the more jaw-dropping large alpine lakes in central Switzerland. Flanked by 600m rock walls on each side, the scenery transports you to a place reminiscent of Patagonia or maybe even Gates of the Arctic Park in Alaska.
The southern mountain ridge from Rot Nossen to Ortstock is especially striking with hundreds of small waterfalls carving cuts into the rock.
The picture below shows the rock layers and folds that are exposed. I am by no means a geologist but I assume this is rock that was folded onto itself as the mountains shot out of the ground however many millions / billions of years ago.
Switzerland is notorious for its wonderfully clean water but the Glattalp Lake had some of the clearest water I have ever seen in my life. The bottom was easily visible even in the deeper sections.
We ended the short hike with a brief lunch out on the patio of the Glattalphütte. It is a beautiful SAC hut with classic cedar siding and has some of the most awe inspiring views especially considering how easy it is to get to.
